One of our members recently had a case of credit card fraud in the parts department with a significant dollar loss. A stolen card was used to make a purchase, and unfortunately, it was able to slip through without being caught. This is a tough reminder that all businesses must stay alert, especially with how common this kind of scam has become.
To help protect both our members and their customers, It is recommended to follow a few simple steps to avoid future thefts:
- Ask for ID. For walk-in purchases, a quick check of a photo ID can make all the difference.
- Always check the details. Make sure the name and billing address on the card match the customer’s ID or order info.
- Use extra caution with large or rushed orders. These are often red flags—don’t hesitate to double-check.
- Don't accept phone or online card payments without a manager's sign-off. It’s a small step that helps catch potential issues before they become bigger problems.
Taking a few extra moments to verify information and follow security protocols can help prevent significant losses and protect your customers’ data. As always, if something doesn’t feel right— slow down and say something. A cautious moment today can save your business tomorrow.
