Massachusetts Temporary Plate Reciprocity Update

Massachusetts Temporary Plate Reciprocity Update

We want to share an important update regarding Massachusetts’ recognition of out-of-state temporary plates. The  Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) has formally notified states that it will now honor temporary registrations issued elsewhere—including those held by Massachusetts residents—on a reciprocal basis.

Conditions for AcceptanceThe Massachusetts RMV will honor out-of-state temporary registrations issued to Massachusetts residents, provided the following conditions are met:

  • The registration must be temporary in nature.

  • The vehicle must properly display the temporary registration in accordance with Section 6 of Chapter 90.

  • The vehicle must carry motor vehicle liability insurance equal to or greater than the minimum limits set forth in Section 34A of Chapter 90.

  • The vehicle must carry property damage insurance equal to or greater than the minimum limits set forth in Section 340 of Chapter 90.

  • Proof of insurance meeting the above minimums must be kept in the vehicle at all times while operating under a temporary registration.

Questions regarding these requirements may be directed to the Massachusetts Office of the Registrar of Motor Vehicles at (857) 368-7724

What This Means for New Hampshire DealersThis update is a welcome change for New Hampshire dealers selling to Massachusetts residents. For years, the prior absence of reciprocity for NH-issued temporary plates created costly workarounds, often requiring runners and added administrative steps. With Massachusetts now honoring properly issued out-of-state temporary registrations, those barriers are reduced, saving time and resources while improving the customer experience.

Temporary Plate/Registration Disclaimer for MA Residents Form

This is the recommended form when a NH dealer sells a vehicle to a MA resident and issues a temporary registration plate. It helps to explain that MA residents still have obligations to the Commonwealth and they are responsible for any and all compliance requirements.
