Best Practices for Vehicle Examinations with Non-State Mandated Stickers

Print this article

With the suspension of New Hampshire’s state-mandated vehicle inspection program, NH auto dealers and repair facilities face unique challenges in ensuring vehicles are safe for the road while maintaining consumer confidence. NHADA recommends the following best practices to maintain safety, transparency, and customer confidence.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

Conduct Thorough Equipment Examinations Before Test Drives or Plate Attachment
Even during the inspection suspension, it is essential that all vehicles undergo a thorough equipment examination prior to:

  1. Test drives

  2. Attachment of temporary dealer plates

These examinations help identify any deficiencies that may affect the safety or roadworthiness of a vehicle. While the state program is paused, consumers still retain the right to request an examination at the time of sale, at their own expense. Dealers must provide a complete list of any deficiencies discovered in accordance with RSA 266.

Implement Non-State Mandated Examination Stickers
A recommended best practice is the use of a non-state mandated examination sticker. This sticker serves multiple purposes:

  • Consumer Confidence: Signals to buyers that a comprehensive vehicle examination has been conducted and that the vehicle meets RSA 266 safety requirements.

  • Sales Staff Guidance: Indicates to dealership staff that a vehicle is safe for test drives and eligible for dealer plate attachment.

  • Repair Facility Benefit: Provides visible confirmation that a vehicle has been examined, whether owned by a dealer or customer.

  • Customer Marketing Opportunity: Allows dealers to offer vehicle examinations as a value-added service. The sticker replaces the visual assurance once provided by the state inspection sticker and reinforces trust with customers.

  • Law Enforcement Recognition: Signals to law enforcement that a vehicle has been examined by a professional source and meets safety standards.

  • Standardization: Creates a consistent internal process for dealerships and repair shops, ensuring all vehicles are assessed to the same standard.

Bottom Line:
Even with the state inspection program on pause, dealers and repair facilities can:

  • Conduct thorough examinations

  • Document and communicate deficiencies

  • Promote vehicle safety to customers

  • Provide visible assurance with NHADA stickers

Adopting these best practices ensures vehicles remain safe for the road, reinforces consumer trust, and streamlines dealership operations.
